William “Wes” Alden, MD, PhD is an internist currently with LCMC/Tulane Health serving the Greater New Orleans and Mandeville areas. He is a physician and medical scientist whose career spans academic research, biochemistry professor, federal clinical trials, community-based medicine, disaster response, overseas medical missions and nonprofit medical leadership and other philanthropic ventures.

Across academic medicine, federally sponsored research, and mission-driven integrative holistic clinical practice, Dr. Alden has focused on translating rigorous biomedical science into practical, ethical, and patient-centered care, particularly for complex neurological, metabolic, and neurodegenerative & addiction-related conditions using holistic medicine whenever possible.

Clinical Practice & Leadership

Dr. Alden currently practices as an internist within the LCMC/Tulane Health system in Louisiana. He has served in senior clinical and medical director roles across internal medicine, physical medicine, metabolic medicine, holistic addiction treatment, and rehabilitation-focused care.

His clinical work emphasizes comprehensive evaluation, longitudinal care, and multidisciplinary treatment for patients with chronic, multisystem, and neurologically complex illnesses.

Research & Scientific Foundations

As a freshman in college, William Alden, MD, PhD received the International Science and Engineering Grand Award, an honor that included attendance at the Nobel Prize ceremonies and a “Junior” Nobel Award from the Swedish Federation of Young Scientists through their group the International Youth Science Seminars (SIYSS). Their role was to provide an intense social and entertainment program combined with science exposure and full access to the Nobel ceremonies, banquet events, and a private royal audience (with King Carl XVI Gustaf).

Later, Dr Alden worked with Nobel Laureate Rosalyn Yalow, Brooks Army Medical Center and the Eleanor Roosevelt Cancer Institute a; all contributing to early-stage biomedical research.

Neurodegenerative Disease & Addiction Focus

Dr. Alden has a longstanding clinical and scientific interest in the holistic treatment of various metabolic and  neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, and Parkinson’s disease, as well as various substance abuse disorders.

This focus reflects decades of research and experience caring for patients with overlapping neurological, metabolic, and behavioral conditions in both academic and community settings, where innovative yet responsible holistic approaches to treatment are most urgently needed.

Community, Mission & Nonprofit Service

Community service is a central component of Dr. Alden's professional life. He has participated in numerous overseas medical missions and local medical mission work serving vulnerable and underserved populations.

Dr. Alden serves as Medical Director of the New Orleans Mission, overseeing clinical services and medical outreach programs. In addition, he serves on the boards of numerous 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, including animal rescue organizations, providing medical, governance, and strategic support.

Dr. Alden has also founded and serves on the advisory board of a number of local 501c3 non-profit organizations, including those that support dog and animal rescue.

Education & Training

Dr. Alden started his medical career in the U.K. and completed the majority of his clinical training at Georgetown, LSU and Tulane Universities; where he further developed his strong foundation in academic medicine and patient-centered integrative holistic medical care. He holds both MD and PhD degrees, with doctoral training in biochemistry, supporting a career that integrates scientific rigor with clinical practice.

Dr Alden continued his education at Princeton University, where is obtained his undergraduate degree in Biochemistry, and then received an Overseas research fellowship to do his Biochemistry PhD at the University of London, Royal London Hospital Medical College in conjunction with research at Oxford University.

This early biomedical research focused on the future development of immune adjuvants for the treatment of cancer; foundational work that anticipated immunologic therapies and medications that are now in clinical use today. These formative experiences established a lifelong interest in translational science and clinically meaningful innovation.

Dr. Alden completed his PhD at the University of London, while also enrolled as a preclinical medical student. Dr Alden later received an appointment as a Professor of Biochemistry teaching medical students.

Later in his career, Dr. Alden served as a Principal Investigator for National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded TACT clinical trials, overseeing federally sponsored research conducted in New Orleans.
